Hey Web3 Island Makers 🏝
Let's dive into this month of March for the DAO. Thanks for following and contributing to the adventure.
In a word, it's been a rich month of March, with a strong focus on 3 projects:
- 🎤 Web3 Con Canarias
The 1st major Web3 - Blockchain - Crypto conference in the Canary Islands - 🏝 Traders Island
Our community-owned DeFi platform for perpetual futures trading - 🫒 Crypto Tapas in Gran Canaria
The first Meetup organized by the community on another island
We are also slowly reaching the end of the cycle of objectives defined in November - read more about it here. Since then, the community has grown but engagement is still being driven by a very small set of core team memers ; which will be a core topic for the next set of objectives.
Preparing Web3 Con Canarias
March was intense regarding the organization of #WCC2023.
We've opened +50 talks with potential speakers, sponsors, partners to mount the most valuable 1st edition we could.
Partners & Speakers 🎤
The communities, media partners and speakers we were lucky to meet along the way have all been super collaborative. Web3 is a mutual help space, this month confirmed it perfectly. We benefitted from support on the social networks and even on the financial level with some speakers buying their own tickets ❤️ We're very grateful to all of you guys, thanks so much for these encouraging initiatives 🙏
In the end, this first edition is supported by 15 partners and 20 speakers!
Sponsorship 🤝
We were not so lucky on the sponsoring part. It appeared most of the time that we were too late in the year to enter companies and/or institutions budgets. So in a budget point of view, we had to review our plans and go minimal with our spending. 0€ spent in advertising for example.
Marketing 📣
With no budget, we experimented an intense social media strategy, with the initiatives and inputs from Raphael, Marco and Mattia. The $1.80 Strategy. Josh brilliantly came up with this edition's graphic identity and Awwal drove the team into followers growth with a meme-contest. We maintained a pace of ±1 post/day and a lot of spontaneous interactions on social networks.
Budget 💰
WCC2023 will most likely end-up with a financial loss. But thanks to the treasury accumulated by Shapers' contributions and some donations, nothing that we shouldn't be able to cover. And at this scale, the benefits of marking this year with this event are more important in our eyes than a breakeven budget.

Traders Island progress
At the moment I'm writing this, Traders Island is stepping up. My phone is non-stop vibrating because of Twitter, Discord and Telegram notifications: entire cohorts of new members are joining every other second!
Perpetual futures are hot, we can feel it!
Community kickoff 🔥
The ambassador program is really taking off with an explosion on our social media channels, airdrops and much more being brilliantly orchestrated by Surajdeep and Marco.
As we’ve not taken any venture capital investment for this project, there is plenty of room for ambassadors and contributors to get their hands on $ISLE tokens.
Development 🧑💻
On the tech side of the platform, March started with tons of doubts: we couldn't find a proper Solidity Lead to secure a quality refurbish of our smart contracts and transition from testnet to mainnet. We had to activate plan B and go harder on Smart Contract development and deployment ourselves. More recently, Eladio has joined the team to give some well needed support with regard to Solidity contracts and much more! By his side Juraj and Daniel continue to work on the front and backend of the platform.
Grants & Chain ⛓
As of today, we have opted for zkSync for our mainnet deployment. The narrative around zero knowledge protocols are at least as hot as perpetual futures and we trust that we can benefit from the current push. After a few unsuccessful applications for grants - all denied because of market conditions - we're still open to join another EVM compatible chain if that chain will support us with financial and technical help.

Crypto Tapas in Gran Canaria
We had our first gig in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria!
This initiative could see the light thanks to JuanMa, David, and all the warm welcome of local web3 community there.
The audience enjoyed the Web3 quiz and awesome new connections were made. Congrats' to the winners!
For the early members, this event added a new depth to the DAO's mission to build a Web3 Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in the Canary Islands. It boosted our motivation to collaborate on the level of the whole archipelago - not only at the level of one island.
You might have guessed it already... among other things, we are strongly considering to host #WCC2024 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 🤫
Community
As usual, a small round of numbers:
- We're 260 on our meetup group and 250 on our Discord server, with ±60 new members this month
- Core team of 6 has been affected by all sorts of bad luck: from earthquake to back pain to Covid 😥 But we're sill here haha!
- Engagement from other community members has been high thanks to the work on Traders Island and Web3 Con Canarias. But we also sense that new members need to grow there own initiatives from the ground up. 15% of our total members were active during March (35), a decrease compared to previous months.
From core projects to incentives to our own Island vibe, we must keep an eye on our internal dynamic to make sure that the highest proportion possible of local web3 builders remain satisfied with their experience in our DAO.
Finally, we want to ensure the projects we are running generate revenue and serve to increase the standard of living of our core team members. We want to ensure the DAO is not just a fun side-hustle, but a meaningful and rewarding lifelong project.
